Report: Leopardstown, Saturday

Deloitte Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m2f, 5yo+

BELLSHILL became the latest victim on a day of odds-on favourites getting turned over and Cheltenham hopes being dashed, with the Neptune fancy thoroughly put in his place by 11-1 stablemate Bleu Et Rouge.

The Pricewise selection, available at 14-1 on Saturday morning, came home three lengths clear of Tombstone, with Bellshill beaten before the last and finishing a further 15 lengths behind.

Bellshill was the third such flop in an hour of racing after Ivanovich Gorbatov’s Triumph Hurdle ambitions took a major knock when fourth at 8-13 and Champion Hurdle hope Peace And Co flopped when sent off 4-7 at Sandown.

Ruby Walsh had attempted to make all on the market leader, but it was clear he was in trouble from the home turn as his Barry Geraghty-ridden stablemate and the Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown representitive swooped past.

Walsh was not hard on his mount when it became obvious he was beaten and he left the two to contest the finish. A bold jump at the last all but sealed things for Bleu Et Rouge and he galloped all the way to the line.

Bleu Et Rouge 16-1 for Neptune

Bellshill’s flop saw him drift to 10-1 joint-second favourite with stablemate Yorkhill, while Yanworth, also owned by JP McManus, was cut further into 6-4. Bleu Et Rouge’s price now ranges from 8-1 to 16-1 with Sky Bet and Paddy Power.

“He was very good and he showed he definitely stays,” said Mullins. “I think he’s still open to improvement and he looked a little green going to the last.”

On his festival target, Mullins added: “It would look like the Neptune because he stayed 2m2f on that ground today no problem.”

Mullins expects to find something amiss with favourite

On Bellshill, he added: “I thought he cut out too quick for that to be his run, and while he made the running they went a sensible gallop. He reached for the first down the back and I’d imagine we’ll find something amiss.”
