Knicks Insider: Fisher says Jerian Grant has the tools

ATLANTA — Derek Fisher gave his rookie point guard a vote of confidence, even though Jerian Grant has struggled and played sparingly after being picked 19th overall.

Many thought Grant, 23, would make an immediate impact in the NBA after playing four years at Notre Dame, but it has been the younger, less experienced rookie — Kristaps Porzingis — who has made an easier adjustment into the NBA. Grant’s production dipped in December to the point he was benched for three entire games. His 24 minutes in Sunday’s win over Atlanta was the most he played since Nov. 15.

“He has all of tools necessary to be a really good player for us going forward,” Fisher said. “He can handle the ball. When he’s under control, he’s making good decisions with the ball. I think he can shoot better than he can shoot sometimes. And he has good size, good hands, defensively. There’s a lot of good things about him. That’s why he’s here, and we believe in him. …We still believe in who he is. We’re still invested in him. We like his future.”

The triangle is a difficult offense for a point guard accustomed to having the ball in his hands, but Fisher said that goes beyond the system.

“If you come from being a point guard and a leader on a college team and then you go to a pro team, you might be the smallest guy on the totem pole in terms of whose locker room it is, whose ego is the biggest, who you have to kind of satisfy out there in the game and making sure gets touches. It’s not your ball to play with and do whatever you want to do with it. So that’s the biggest adjustment for young guards is understanding they’re not the most important guy anymore.

CLEANTHONY EARLY MAKES APPEARANCE AT KNICKS PRACTICE

Lou Amundson was one of the last holdouts of the man bun, but the Knicks reserve forward chopped it off before the trip to Atlanta and sported a jarring crew cut at Tuesday morning’s shootaround.

Apparently the reasons were existential.

“Being defined by a look, it’s not what it’s about,” he said. “It’s about what you have inside. It was time for a change.”

The man bun survives with Bulls center Joakim Noah.

Amundson, 33, the ultimate NBA journeyman who has played for 11 teams in his career, was traded to the Knicks exactly a year ago from Tuesday in the deal that sent J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to the Cavaliers.

“That was a tough night,” Carmelo Anthony said. “Coming into the arena, not knowing what’s going on, and it just happened like that. I had to deal with that situation and still go out on the court and try to perform and put it behind you. It was a long couple of hours when we got to the arena. I’ll never forget that.”

MELO FOCUSED ON ASSISTING KNICKS, NOT SCORING

Carmelo Anthony’s wife has struggled to get him more involved in social media, but LeBron James had no problem.

In rapid succession on Monday, James, Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul – the most powerful player clique in the NBPA — cast All-Star votes for one another on Twitter. Anthony, who stood to benefit by the exposure because the first returns of the voting had him fourth among Eastern Conference frontcourt players, revealed Tuesday this wasn’t a planned synchronization among friends but rather an organic social media campaign kicked off by James.

“That’s what friends are for,” he said. “We don’t talk about that stuff. Some things just happen.”

Apparently Anthony isn’t such an eager tweeter when discussing it with his reality TV personality wife, LaLa, who is active with her 3.41 million followers.

“Sometimes we have arguments over social media,” Anthony said. “I’m more the stay-away-from-it. She’s more day-to-day basis. I try to tell her you don’t need to do it. She says, ‘Who are you to tell me? I got more followers than you (Anthony actually has seven million). …I can’t tell her what to do. She’s got her own team and own thing.”

The Pistons, with their center Andre Drummond leading Anthony by just 16,000 votes in the first returns, responded Tuesday with a video of Barack Obama speech snippets blended together to make a hype rap video for Drummond.

Anthony also cast a vote for teammate Kristaps Porzingis, who is a longshot for the big game on Valentine’s Day in Toronto but is a lock for the Rookie-Sophomore contest two days earlier.

“Of course. He should be up there. He should be getting some votes. I’d love to be with him in Toronto,” Anthony said. “Whether it’s in that game or of course he’ll be in the rookie game, but just for him to have that experience, why not?”
