DARYL JACOB, rider of the horse bookmakers believe represents Britain’s best chance of upsetting Faugheen, Willie Mullins and Ireland next month, is hoping to gain an important pre-Cheltenham boost on Saturday when Peace And Co faces a crucial test of his Stan James Champion Hurdle claims.

Jacob, who found last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner to be almost uncontrollable when he reappeared with a last-place finish at Cheltenham in December, will be aboard once again when the five-year-old bids to restore his reputation in Sandown’s Betfred-sponsored Contenders Hurdle.

Peace And Co, a best-priced 14-1 shot for the Champion, heads to Sandown after the first defeat of his career and needing to show he is a worthy adversary to Faugheen, who is as short as 1-4 to defend his crown.

Faugheen’s stablemate Sempre Medici – second to Old Guard in the International Hurdle in which Peace And Co flopped – was on Tuesday revealed to be one possible Sandown opponent. Paddy Power made Peace And Co evens favourite, with Sempre Medici 7-4 and Rayvin Black 9-2.

Repeat Triumph form

“He worked very nicely when I rode him this morning. I was really happy,” said Jacob. “He felt great. All roads now hopefully lead to Sandown and I’m looking forward to riding him there.

“I’m definitely able to forget his last run. He was too keen and free and I’m putting a line through that and not expecting any of that freshness this time. I’m hoping he’ll put up a great performance and show everyone the horse who was so good when he won the Triumph.”

Peace And Co, Sempre Medici and Rayvin Black head the nine possibles for the Contenders Hurdle, which had been reopened on Monday and which offers one of the final opportunities for Champion Hurdle aspirants to stake their claim.

Assessing underfoot conditions, Sandown clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said on Tuesday that he expects “far from deep, desperate ground, particularly on the chase course”.

The chase track – on which Saturday’s feature, the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase will take place – was soft, good to soft in places, with the hurdles course heavy with soft places.
