Jacob deGrom is blaming a soft mattress for the stiff back he’s dealing with.

Jacob deGrom was scratched from his scheduled start in Lakeland Monday because of back stiffness. The righthander said it was precautionary because of the two and a half hour bus ride to the Tigers’ spring training complex.

When asked if this would affect his ability to pitch on Opening Day, April 3, if chosen, deGrom said, “I’ll be ready.”

The 27-year-old said he would throw an extensive bullpen session instead of the game Monday.

DeGrom, who has had the issue for a few days, attributed the back issue to a soft mattress. He said he had a firmer one overnighted to his place in Port St. Lucie last week.

DeGrom was also delayed throwing off the mound this spring because of groin tightness.
