KILLULTAGH VIC, who was 2-1 favourite for the JLT Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham next month, will miss the festival, and probably the rest of the season, after suffering a suspensory injury.

At Leopardstown last month the seven-year-old and Ruby Walsh made an amazing recovery after blundering badly at the final fence to win a Grade 2 novice chase.

His trainer Willie Mullins told the Racing Post on Wednesday: “He seemed fine after Leopardstown but when we stepped up his work we discovered a suspensory problem. We don’t know whether what happened at Leopardstown caused the injury or whether it was something that happened since.

“Unfortunately he’s out of Cheltenham and it’s unlikely that he will run again this season.”

Killultagh Vic won at the festival last year, when he landed the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, and subsequently went on to achieve Grade 1 success at the Punchestown festival.

He won by 15 lengths on his debut over fences at Fairyhouse in December before achieving his dramatic victory at Leopardstown.

His absence will ensure a shake-up of the JLT market, with last Saturday’s Scilly Isles winner Bristol De Mai assuming favouritism.
