JUST because you are a proven Group 1 winner, that does not mean you are not still improving. That is the frightening prospect for anyone tempted to oppose Twilight Son in the Diamond Jubilee.

There is no doubt he was one of the best sprinters around last season, progressing from handicaps to land the Haydock Sprint Cup and beat all bar the outstanding Muhaarar in the Champions Sprint here.

Yet trainer Henry Candy reckons he will be even better as a four-year-old this season – and he should know.

He trained Twilight Son’s sire Kyllachy – who stepped up markedly at four and won the Nunthorpe – and his half-brother Music Master, who improved with age and finished fourth in this event twice.

Nor was Candy’s faith shaken by the colt’s managing only fifth place at York last month, the only time he has finished outside the first two.
The ground was probably firmer than ideal, a 5lb Group 1 penalty set him a stiff task against rivals as good as him, and there was a strong suggestion he would be better for the race.

They are back at level weights on Saturday, the going will be more suitable, and he is reported in fine shape for his fifth clash with the winner Magical Memory, whom he had beaten three times before York.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Candy said. “He’ll cope with the ground, while maybe some of the others won’t. It was a shade quick at York and he’s done well since that race, he needed that.

“You would hope he’ll improve again this season, but it’s going to be a very tough race.”
