David Bowie was reportedly involved in the development of the Yankees’ website.

Well, this is a ch-ch-ch-changeup of sorts, isn’t it?

David Bowie, the innovative rocker who died Monday at age 69, was a key figure in the Yankees’ early development of their own website, according to a story on CBSsports.com.

Bowie formed an Internet company called UltraStar, which created the club’s official website in 1999, back in the days before Major League Baseball Advanced Media was born.

According to an MTV story about the venture that CBS quotes, Bowie released a punny statement at the time:

“We couldn’t be more pleased to be working with the premier team in all of sports,” Bowie said. “We hope to deal with one of the most profound unanswered questions in all of sports: Paul O’Neill can play drums, Bernie Williams can play guitar, but who’s on bass?”

What would Abbott and Costello say about that one?

The article goes on to quote from a Rolling Stone piece from 1999 in which Bowie says he was quite familiar with America’s national pastime, too.

In other words, Ziggy played….baseball?

“Well! It’s legendary, my connection with baseball, surely,” Bowie said. “You mean to tell me you don’t know? Actually, there is a true thing there, somewhere. When I was 14, I was a member of a group of expatriate Canadians who had a team called the Dulwich Blue Jays, and they’d play on weekends, and I used to play outfield for them. So I have worn the mitt.”
