Sha Tin: BMW Hong King Derby (Group 1) 1m2f, turf

RYAN MOORE will attempt to make Hong Kong Derby history aboard Sun Jewellery at Sha Tin on Sunday, having already struck up a fruitful partnership with the John Size-trained son of Snitzel.

Moore partnered Sun Jewellery to success in the two main prep races for the 1m2f BMW-sponsored Classic but no horse has won all three legs.

“Every bit of history is important,” said Size. “If you can create something that’s unique it’s good for everyone. It would be a nice achievement for the horse and I hope he can do it.”

Size also saddles Eastern Express – who dead-heated for third behind Sun Jewellery and the John Moore hope Werther in the Hong Kong Classic Cup – the more guaranteed stayer of the pair.

Size said: “Sun Jewellery is the highest-rated horse (110) and the highest-rated horses have a good record. But Eastern Express is probably the ideal 2,000 metre horse, so he’s got that in his favour.”

Silverstre de Sousa rides the confusingly-named gelding Lucky Girl and will have some interesting tactical decisions to make on a horse with a real turn of foot, having been drawn in stall one.

Among the horses familiar to European viewers in the line-up are Giovanni Canaletto, who was fourth to Golden Horn in the Derby at Epsom, as well as the ex-Sir Michael Stoute inmate Consort and Green Dispatch who, when known as War Dispatch, was third to New Bay in last season’s Prix du Jockey Club.
