Robert Cantor, with his son Michael, is suing the New York Rangers for injuries he says came from a puck at a 2013 match.

A hockey fan who says he was injured saving his son from a flying puck at a New York Rangers game in 2013 is suing the team, Madison Square Garden and the National Hockey League for unspecified damages.

The fan, Robert Cantor, suffered “severe and permanent injuries” on March 3, 2013, when he was “struck by a high speed projectile (puck),” according to papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Cantor, 59, of Westport, Conn., was seated between midrink and goalie with his 11-year-old son when a Rangers player’s shot was deflected by a Buffalo player, according to Eitan Ogen, Cantor’s lawyer.

“It sailed over the plexiglass,” Ogen said. “It was about to hit his son’s face. (Cantor) put out his left hand to protect his son.”

The result was a torn tendon in the hand and wrist injuries that required surgery. Cantor also needed surgery on his right shoulder where he tore his right rotator cuff and labrum.

Ogen said the puck was able to sail over the glass because at that point in the protective wall there is a dip in the glass for camera crews to get their shots.

A man struck by a puck at 2013 Rangers game is suing the team, the National Hockey League and Madison Square Garden.

He said there is no netting there like there is at the far ends of the rink where fans are protected from pucks slammed toward goalies, a relatively new safety measure required by the NHL.

Ogen said MSG staff gave the property manager minimal assistance.

A man purporting to be a doctor in the first aid office refused to do anything for him — not even provide ice. Cantor got ice and a splint with electrical tape from an electrician, the lawyer said.

He saw an orthopedist the next day.

There was no immediate comment from MSG.
