HEAVY rain overnight is likely to mean ground of the same description at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said on Friday night he was expecting up to 8mm of rain which would lead to a going change to heavy from Friday’s description of soft.

The outlook for Saturday is largely dry, but Claisse said on Friday: “We are forecast 7-8mm of rain overnight and it will change the going description to heavy. We are expecting a crowd of around 19,000.”

It’s not just the course that requires close maintenance, with the racecourse also ensuring car parking facilities will be available to all racegoers even if the rain arrives overnight.

Regional communications manager Sophia Dale added: “Some areas of the car parking facilities may be cordoned off if it gets too wet, although we will have no problems providing parking for all racegoers.”

Racing is also set to take place at Doncaster, Fairyhouse and Uttoxeter over jumps and on the all-weather at Lingfield.
