THE Qatar Sussex Stakes has all the makings of a Glorious Goodwood highlight as it was confirmed on Monday that Galileo Gold, The Gurkha and Awtaad will once again do battle.

Each has won a 2,000 Guineas this season, with Galileo Gold successful at Newmarket, Atwaad winning the Irish equivalent and The Gurkha the French version.

The trio locked horns at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Palace, and it was Hugo Palmer’s Galileo Gold who triumphed, with Frankie Dettori getting first run on Ryan Moore aboard The Gurkha.

Ribchester, another Royal Ascot winner, adds further spice to the mix with the Jersey Stakes victor lining up for Richard Fahey.

Godolphin also have Toormore engaged, with Gabrial, Kodi Bear, Lightning Spear, Richard Pankhurst and So Beloved completing the field of ten for the Group 1.

Other Wednesday declarations

Aidan O’Brien won the Group 3 Beringice Gordon Stakes last year with future King George winner Highland Reel, and this time has two contenders, Shogun and The Major General.

Sir Michael Stoute also has a pair of runners with Platitude and Ulysses, while Jim Bolger’s The Qatari Hunter bids for a four-timer.

Norfolk fifth Global Applause is set for the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes, with 12 juveniles declared.
