COLIN KEANE, one of the bright young stars among the ranks of Irish jockeys, is excited at the prospect of partnering Blue De Vega in Saturday’s Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, in which he believes his mount has a good chance of thriving for the step up in trip.

The 21-year-old will be seeking a first Classic success – as will the colt’s trainer Michael O’Callaghan.

Blue De Vega was on Thursday among eight final declarations for the Curragh Classic, in which his rivals will include 2,000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold and Air Force Blue, who will be attempting to make up for his poor performance at Newmarket.

Keane, who rides most of Qatar Racing’s horses in Ireland, has partnered Blue De Vega on the colt’s last two starts, winning the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes over seven furlongs on the son of Lope De Vega at Leopardstown in October and, more recently, when finishing second to Awtaad –  a rival again on Saturday –  in the Listed Tetrarch Stakes at the Curragh earlier this month.

‘He should improve’

Keane, who finished second to Pat Smullen in the jockeys’ title last year, having been champion apprentice in 2014, said on Thursday: “I’m excited and really looking forward to riding Blue De Vega on Saturday. He came out of his Tetrarch run well and there should be a nice bit of improvement in him.

“The Tetrarch rode like a good race. It was his first run of the year and when they quickened he was caught a bit flat-footed for a few strides before getting his second wind and running on well. I think that going a mile for the first time should suit him well.”

Blue De Vega is a general 10-1 shot for the first Classic of the Irish season behind 7-4 favourite Galileo Gold. Air Force Blue is best at 11-4, with Awtaad 11-2  and Air Vice Marshal generally 6-1.

Going changes on Thursday

The ground on the straight course at the Curragh, which was good to firm, good in places early on Thursday following 2.2mm of rain overnight, was changed to good later in the morning following a further 3.4mm after 8am.

Speaking on Thursday, the track’s racing manager Paul Hensey said: “We’ve had only 1mm of rain since the ground description was changed this morning. It’s been a bright, warm and breezy day here and there is the possibility of further showers. We’ll walk the track early in the morning and give an update.”

The ground on the round course was good, good to firm in places yesterday afternoon.
