ODDS-ON favourite Grendisar gained an elusive first Finals Day win following two narrow defeats under a cool ride from Adam Kirby.

Marco Botti’s middle-distance specialist landed a seventh course victory, although he was given a brief scare by French raider Metropol, who ran a fine race in third.

Kirby, who finished second to Luke Morris in the all-weather jockeys title, was visibly delighted and spoke emotionally after landing an important victory on the climax of the winter season.

He said: “I can’t explain what it means to me. Unfortunately I missed out on the jockeys’ championship but it’s nice to be on a horse like this. He got on with it and put the race to bed.”

How it developed

Watersmeet, partnered by Joe Fanning, ensured there was a fair tempo throughout, though it was the Theo Bachelot-ridden Metropol who appeared well-positioned to spring an upset when taking up the running in the home straight.

However, Bachelot’s move was quickly covered by Kirby, with the smooth-travelling Grendisar quickening up nicely to secure owner Mohamed Albousi Alghufli the whopping £124,500 prize.

The ultra-consistent Fire Fighting produced another fine effort to grab second under Fran Berry, staying on well from the rear of the field.

Future plans

Botti, who runs Lazzam, Naadirr and Euro Charline on World Cup night at Meydan, was relieved to see his all-weather specialist win.

He said: “We couldn’t have been happier with him but things can always go wrong in a race. He showed today, even down the outside, that he runs to the line. He’s a lovely horse and he deserves to win a race like this.”

The Newmarket trainer revealed the six-year-old will enjoy a well-deserved summer break before attempting to repeat his Good Friday heroics next season.

Botti said: “We will put him away now and let him enjoy the summer – he deserves it.

“We’ll bring him back in as a seven-year-old and follow a similar campaign to this season. You never know, he might come back even better next season.”
