CARELESS riding inquiries in Ireland fell by a quarter in 2015, with an improvement in the standard of riding at Dundalk cited as the main reason for the dramatic decrease.

The number of inquiries into the offence fell to 71 last year, according to the Turf Club’s integrity statistics published on Tuesday.

Turf Club chief executive Denis Egan said: “The decline in the number of careless riding inquires was due to a significant decrease in such inquiries at Dundalk. The main reason for this is that riders have become more accustomed to riding the track with the false rail at the turn into the straight which was introduced in 2014.”

The Turf Club’s integrity statistics cover a wide range of issues, including stewards’ inquiries, drug testing of horses and riders, medical matters and handicap ratings.

A total of 168 riders were drug tested and three samples confirmed as positive (there were two findings of metabolites of cocaine and one of Bisoprolol), while 974 riders were breath-tested with all results negative. There were 3,315 horses tested for prohibited substances, with five positive results.

‘Golden era’

Elsewhere, there was especially positive news regarding the quality of chasers in Ireland, with the report hailing a “golden era at present”, evidenced by there being “more horses with steeplechase handicap ratings of 140 or greater than at any time in the past”.

This strength in depth is evident when it comes to the betting for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup as the the top four horses in the market are trained in Ireland, with Cue Card, at 7-1, the shortest-priced British representative.

Importance of concussion

Concussion in sport, and the subsequent long-term impact, has been drawn sharply into focus in recent years. Commenting on concussion in jump racing, Dr Adrian McGoldrick, the Turf Club’s senior medical officer, said: “There were 14 concussions on the racecourse with six of the 14 riders passing their concussion test after six days, which is the minimum stand-down period.”

McGoldrick also stressed the importance of riders and their families, trainers and owners being aware of the symptoms of concussion so that those who suffer a concussion while riding out do not slip through the net.
