ULYSSES stormed to victory in impressive fashion to dispel memories of a poor Derby display and demonstrate the ability his pedigree promised, providing Sir Michael Stoute with a ninth victory in a race he last won in 2014.

A son of Galileo and out of Oaks winner Light Shift, Ulysses was once again prominent in the early betting before drifting to a start price of 9-2 and being toppled as favourite by Platitude, who only beat one home.

Fears of another underwhelming display by Ulysses were resoundly dismissed, as the colt travelled smoothly through the field before being asked for an effort inside the final furlong. Andrea Atzeni pushed him out to the line to hold off the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair of The Major General and Shogun, who was a distant third.

‘Still learning’

Jockey Andrea Atzeni, who kept the ride following the Derby, was impressed with his ruthless display.

“He put the race to bed very quickly,” he said. “He travelled well through the race and although he was a little bit keen, he’s probably still learning but he has lots of ability.”

Sir Michael Stoute said that Ulysses would not be supplemented for the St Leger in September.

“He got badly buffeted and knocked around at Epsom, which didn’t do him any good, so we backed off him and brought him along smoothly,” he said.

“He’ll have learned a lot today and still has more to learn but he has good potential. I like him on that surface as he can accelerate it. He can go ten furlongs or twelve but he wouldn’t be going to the St Leger. He’s in the Voltigeur and the Eugene Adam, but we’ll take our time deciding where to go.”
