Mario Williams is making a free agent visit to the Dolphins, but Giants have also reached out.

The start of free agency is still a few days away, but the Giants’ chase for pass rushing help has already begun.

The Giants reached out to the agent for Mario Williams and expressed some interest in the former Buffalo Bills defense end, a league source told the Daily News, but not enough interest to prevent him from making his first free-agent visit to Miami. The 31-year-old Williams was on his way to meet with the Dolphins on Saturday, according to the NFL Network.

It wasn’t immediately known if he had plans to visit the Giants or any other teams, too.

Even if Williams does sign with the Dolphins, it could benefit the Giants because it could make it much easier for them – or any other team – to pry defensive end Olivier Vernon away. The Dolphins placed the “transition tag” on Vernon, their 25-year-old defensive end, guaranteeing him a one-year deal for $12.7 million. Vernon can still solicit offers in free agency and the Dolphins would have the right to match, but they are not expected to match any significant offer.

They definitely wouldn’t match if they can land Williams instead.

It’s unclear how aggressive the Giants planned to be for either player. According to a team source, they are planning to spend big on defensive help, particularly along the defensive line if possible. They likely would prefer someone younger than Williams, who had five sacks last season and was cut by the Bills on Tuesday. But he could be a good fallback option – and a less expensive one – if they’re unable to land a player like Vernon or Denver’s Malik Jackson when the market opens on Wednesday.

Williams was unproductive in Buffalo last season, but he appeared miscast (and unhappy) in Rex Ryan’s 3-4 defense. He had double-digit sacks in each of the three previous seasons and some NFL scouts think he could revive in his career playing a 4-3 scheme like the Giants run.
