Giants cut Beason, 2 others, clear $12 million in cap space

The Giants began what could be a massive, offseason overhaul on Wednesday when they released three high-priced, but injury-prone players, according to multiple sources, clearing about $12 million in salary cap space they can use to rebuild their 6-10 team.

Guard Geoff Schwartz, tackle Will Beatty and linebacker Jon Beason were the first casualties, getting their release just three days after Super Bowl 50. They Giants cleared approximately $5.1 million in cap room by cutting Beason – who announced his retirement later in the day. They also cleared $4.175 million by cutting Beatty and $3 million by cutting Schwartz.

With the salary cap room they were already expected to have, those moves figure to leave the Giants with as much as $60 million in cap space to spend when the free-agent signing period opens in March.

And they still could clear more room, especially if, as expected, they cut the salary of Victor Cruz, who is due a $7.9 million in 2016. Cruz, 29, missed all of last season with a torn left calf muscle after missing most of 2014 with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. If the Giants cut Cruz outright they’d clear another $8 million in salary cap space. However, indications are they’ll offer him a pay cut instead and give him a chance to attempt a comeback in training camp. They could clear more than $6 million in cap space that way, too.

Of course, the Giants will need all that cap space and more as they try to “reload”, in the words of new coach Ben McAdoo. They’ll need replacements for all three players they cut on Wednesday, and countless others on a team that has suffered three straight losing seasons and last year had the worst defense in the league. The departures of Beatty and Schwartz leave the Giants short-handed on the offensive line and there is no obvious replacement on the roster to replace Beason at middle linebacker.

TOM COUGHLIN NOT DOING ‘VERY WELL’ WITHOUT FOOTBALL

Still, all three had to go due to their age, salaries, and most importantly their injury history. That history has dogged Beason, who is 31 and was due to make $2.8 million in 2016. A nine-year vet, he came to the Giants in an early season trade from Carolina in 2013 – a deal, for a seventh-round pick, that initially looked like a steal. As a result of his play that season, the Giants looked past his injury troubles and signed him to a three-year, $16.8 million contract.

But he hurt his toe in training camp that season and played in only four games. Then knee and ankle injuries limited to five games last season and he was facing the possibility of more knee surgery this offseason. Injuries limited him to just 29 games in the last five seasons overall.

“I feel like I let people down in terms of my availability to play on Sundays,” Beason said. “It was extremely difficult and unfortunately consistent the latter part of my career.”

Beatty, 30, was due to make $6.625 million this season and he has missed time in his career due to back injury, a detatched retina, a broken leg and a torn pec that sidelined him for the entire 2014 season. The former second-round pick (2009) had two years left on a five-year, $38.75 million deal he signed in 2013.

Schwartz, 29, had joined the Giants as a free agent in 2014, signing a four-year, $16.8 million contract, and he was due a 2016 salary of $3.925 million. But a toe injury and later a broken ankle and broken leg limited him to just 13 games in two seasons with the Giants. Schwartz, via Twitter, insisted “I’m healthy now … No doubt I can still ball and play well.”
