Report: France, Saturday

Saint-Cloud: Prix Rose de Mai (Listed) 1m2f, 3yo fillies

CAMPROCK (Pia Brandt/Maxime Guyon) made excellent late headway to catch Besotted inside the final half furlong and set up a possible tilt at the Prix Saint-Alary.

The first Flat meeting of the season in Paris was run on extremely holding ground and Camprock, a daughter of Myboycharlie, had only a narrow-margin maiden win on Chantilly’s Polytrack at the end of January by way of racecourse know-how to call on.

“Despite her inexperience she managed to accelerate again in the final 100 metres and she has done it well,” said Brandt. “She is a serious filly and it bodes well for the future. I think she will be better on good ground.”

Camprock races in the colours of Anna and Etienne Drion, the husband and wife team behind the Coulonces Consignment, who can now dream of a crack at Group 1 success.

Brandt said: “I was waiting to see what she did today but the aim will be the Prix Saint-Alary. We will see whether she needs another run in between.”

Cristian Demuro scored his most important success to date since being appointed as first jockey to Gerald Augustin Normand, as Apilobar (Fabrice Vermeulen) continued his ascent of the racing pyramid with a fourth win in seven starts.

Augustin-Normand took a share in the son of Slickly after his most recent success at Cagnes-sur-Mer and Apilobar came from off the pace to score by three lengths from Godolphin’s Talismanic.

“I was worried that there might only be five runners who nobody really bothered to follow,” said Vermeulen. “I was also worried he might pull but he is maturing and I think he showed he will stay a bit further today. I think there is still more to come because he has had some fairly easy races up to now. The obvious next race is the Prix la Force.”

Recent history is encouraging for the winning connections, with Piment Rouge having gone on from victory in this race last season to outrun his odds when fourth in the Prix du Jockey Club, while 2014 hero, Gailo Chop, is expected to line up in the Dubai Sheema Classic at the end of the month, having already scored at Group 1 level in Australia last autumn.

Saint-Cloud: Prix Altipan (Listed) 1m, 4yo+

A name with a fine tradition in German racing was back in the limelight as the six-year-old Sussudio scored his first Listed success for Hella Sauer, widow of the late trainer Norbert.

“It is not really soft enough for him and he has been off a long time but Norbert Sauer’s horses were always at their best at this stage of the season and Sussudio is improving,” said Filip Minarik, who last month signed as retained rider at the Hannover yard of Norbert Sauer’s daughter Melanie.
