Cheltenham: the home of champions, but who is your favourite?

CHELTENHAM is a wellspring of public heroes. Epic horses like Arkle and Kauto Star won hearts as well as prizes, while tenacious underdogs that may not be worthy of entry to racing’s Pantheon of greats gathered huge fanbases for their never-say-die spirit.

But which horse has done more to capture our hearts and send our spirits soaring than any other? Who among these heroes is the true people’s champion?

Over the next two weeks the Racing Post is seeking to answer this question by pitting 64 of the most popular Cheltenham winners against each other in a series of polls that will end with one horse crowned as the people’s champion.

How it works

First, we chose 16 champions from each of the big-four races – the Champion Hurdle, the Champion Chase, the World Hurdle and Gold Cup.

For each race, the 16 have been split into four groups of four, which will face off in a round robin system to yield our four finalists. We seeded the 16 to avoid creating a group of death, then drew names out of a hat – a bit like a very low-budget World Cup draw.

The four winners will then face each other in a race final and, once we have our four most popular winners of the big races, they will go forward to one last vote – a grand final to find our champion of champions.

A note on how we picked the horses

This was not a scientific process – we picked our favourites the same way anyone would, by sitting round a pub table and arguing about it – so we will inevitably have missed out some popular winners.

One thing to point out, though, is that we favoured recent winners over those from many decades ago, on the basis that a horse from the 1920s is unlikely to have many fans left.
