Former NHLer Brian McGrattan knocked out during AHL fight

Former NHL veteran Brian McGrattan was part of a scary scene in a minor-league hockey game Tuesday night when he was knocked unconscious during a fight and taken off the ice on a stretcher.

The right winger, who’s trying to make it back to the pros and is currently playing with the San Diego Gulls in the American Hockey League, got into it with San Antonio Rampage defender Daniel Maggio in the second period.

A right hook from Maggio sent McGrattan face-first onto the ice, unconscious. He had to be carried out on a stretcher.

The Gulls later tweeted that he was conscious, alert and had full movement.

McGrattan tweeted Wednesday morning that he’ll be back on the ice soon.

“Thanks for all the msgs. Everything is fine i am not dead and will be back shortly!! Been around a long time and know the risks!!”

Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1999, 34-year-old McGrattan has also played for the Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames and five AHL teams.

He currently holds the AHL record for the most penalty minutes in one season, set at 551 in 2004-2005 with the Binghamton Senators.
