Food for Sandoval like booze for an alcoholic: trainer

Pablo Sandoval’s heft is becoming a weighty issue in Boston.

Portion control is not on the menu for Pablo Sandoval.

The husky third baseman doesn’t know when enough is enough, and his former trainer tells the Boston Herald that the 29-year-old needs a “babysitter” to tell him when to stop eating.

“I care about him greatly,” Ethan Banning told the Herald. “But it’s a tough love. He needs to be smart enough to say there’s a problem. It’s like the alcoholic that won’t admit he’s an alcoholic: well, you can’t address that you’re an alcoholic if you don’t ever admit there’s a problem. He’s got to address that.

“He’s proven to me and shown consistently that he’s got to have somebody like me holding his hand doing that. And it’s not an exercise thing, it’s an eating thing. Obviously exercise is an important factor in it, a very important factor, but eating is going to be the component that needs to be managed and monitored. We had a chef on staff that cooked all his meals.”

Banning told the paper that he once ran Sandoval through an intense workout where he lost 21 pounds in 21 days while hiding from the Giants. Banning said that he would pick Sandoval up at “a random location” and bring him to the facility so the Giants wouldn’t see Sandoval’s car in the lot and decide to pop in on the pound-shedding regimen that Sandoval was going through three times a day, six days a week and twice more on the seventh day.

“It was that bad. I mean, it got out of control,” Banning said of Sandoval’s eating.

Sandoval’s weight has been an issue since spring training when he showed up looking overweight, leading to a dispute between the team and the $95 million player. He was put on the disabled list this week with a shoulder issue, and Yahoo! Sports reports that he told the Red Sox that he wants to be traded if they won’t play him.

On Saturday in Toronto, Sandoval’s belt came undone when he swung and missed on a pitch from R.A. Dickey, leading to a slew of jokes about his size.

“I think that he’s embarrassed right now,” Banning told the Herald.
