Barters Hill: got the job done in gusty fashion at Doncaster

Following a fascinating weekend of informative trials, what have we learned with regards to the Cheltenham Festival?

Mullins is not invincible

After dominating races in Britain and Ireland last weekend many were questioning how Willie Mullins could possibly be stopped. However, British trainers fought back hard.

Shaneshill was the first Mullins hotpot to bite the dust. Appearing to be a long way below his best over a trip possibly too sharp, the 11-8 favourite struggled to cope with Vaniteux’s jumping at Doncaster and a mistake at the fourth-last all but ended his race. He will need to improve leaps and bounds if he is to score at the festival.

Mullins’ weekend did not get any better when Djakadam took a tumble in the BetBright Trial Chase leaving more questions than answers regarding the six-year-old’s Timico Gold Cup credentials as he relinquished his place at the head of the market.

The next of Mullins’ big festival contenders to perish was Up For Review at Doncaster against Albert Bartlett favourite Barters Hill.

Despite not visually impressing, Barters Hill had enough guts to get the job done and it is hard to see Up For Review reversing that form.

Thistlecrack(Tom Scudamore) wins the Cleeve Hurdle

Thistlecrack is worthy World favourite

The biggest question mark regarding Thistlecrack was whether he handles the undulations of Cheltenham with the only bad run in his career coming at the track last year.

However, he silenced his critics with a devastating performance, sauntering through the field with ease and putting the race to bed with a superb leap at the last to win easily. He handles the track alright, and it is difficult to see what could beat him.

Smad Place (Richard Johnson) win the 3m 1f trial chase

Smad Place: thrived from the front in the BetBright Trial Chase

Front is the place to be for Smad

A return to front-running tactics again brought the best out of Smad Place as he entered the Gold Cup picture with a thrilling victory in the BetBright Chase.

After his pulsating Hennessy success from the front earlier in the season, Smad Place was forced to settle in behind Vautour and Silviniaco Conti in the King George. He didn’t show his usual zest that day, and, after the Gold Cup was confirmed by trainer Alan King as his festival target, you would have to think the plan will be to make all, even if that could lead to a battle with Vautour.

Yanworth another star for McManus

All the talk this season has been about Rich Ricci and his battalion of stars. However, JP McManus also has a strong team and Yanworth was the latest to dazzle.

Following a performance that oozed class, Yanworth was cut to 11-4 favourite (from 9-1) for the Neptune Investment Mangement Novices’ Hurdle and you would be brave to back against him such was the ease in which he travelled and powered away from his rivals.

McManus now has five favourites for the festival – Minella Foru, Yanworth, Josies Orders, Ivanovich Gorbatov and On The Fringe – and is lively contender to challenge Ricci for the owners’ crown.

LIMINI

Limini (pink): favourite for the inaugural Mares’ Novice Hurdle

Limini could be special

If things had not gone so well for Rich Ricci and Willie Mullins in Britain, back in Ireland their presence was still being felt as Limini confirmed the promise of her previous success in Ireland with a dominating performance in the 2m2f mares’ novice hurdle at Fairyhouse and was cut to 5-4 favourite (from 7-2) for the inaugural Mares’ Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham.

The form from her previous Punchestown victory in May has worked out phenomenally well, and, after her closest rival in the market, Myska, was well beaten on Sunday, she appears to be a long way ahead of anything else in the yard and will be regarded as another Irish banker at the meeting trained by Mullins.
