FAUGHEEN has been ranked as the highest-rated two-mile hurdler since Istabraq following his scintillating runaway success in the Irish Champion Hurdle at the weekend.

The Willie Mullins-trained star has been given a RPR (Racing Post Ratings) of 176 for his victory, the highest rating for a horse in the two-mile hurdle division since 1999.

Faugheen’s performance at Leopardstown on Sunday brought rapturous praise from rider Ruby Walsh, who described him as “absolutely brilliant”.

Mullins described the victory as “electrifying” and bookies, who had Faugheen as a 8-13 festival favourite before the race, now make him no bigger than 2-5 to defend the Stan James Champion Hurdle crown at Cheltenham in March.

With Faugheen already ranked – at least on RPRs – as the finest two-mile hurdler of the 21st century, the big question now is increasingly not whether anything can beat him at Cheltenham, but how high his star can soar.

RPR analysis: Faugheen the best since Istabraq

Willie Mullins dominated the Grade 1 action at the weekend, when his most significant winner on RPRs was Faugheen (176), whose runaway success in the Irish Champion Hurdle ranks him as the best two-mile hurdler since Istabraq, writes Sam Walker.

The eight-year-old’s 15-length win over familiar rival Arctic Fire (160) was the best performance we have seen from Faugheen – and the best from any two-mile hurdler for the last 15 years.

Nichols Canyon (151) may have underperformed in third, but the margins were huge, the time was good and the winner was really impressive.

Faugheen’s odds for a repeat Cheltenham success were cut after this victory, while perhaps more interestingly the odds of distant second Arctic Fire were also clipped, making him clear second favourite. That says it all about the lack of competition for the Stan James Champion Hurdle favourite.
