Ex-Met righty Clippard agrees to 2-year deal with D-backs

Reliever Tyler Clippard, who helped the Mets win the NL East last season but struggled badly in September and October, has officially moved on as a free agent, agreeing to a two-year deal with the Diamondbacks, according to a major league source.

The Mets had only mild interest in retaining Clippard, and weren’t considering anything more than a one-year deal.

Clippard started strong for the Mets after coming over at the trade deadline in a deal with the A’s, but he pitched to a 6.14 ERA in September and then gave up five runs in 6 2/3 innings in the post-season.

EARLY LOOK AT METS’ POSSIBLE OPENING DAY LINEUP

“His fastball velocity was down and his change-up was up, and his walks were up,” an NL scout said. “It may have had something to do with a back injury, but it’s not a good combination. I’m surprised he got a two-year deal.”

The Mets, meanwhile, signed free-agent lefty Antonio Bastardo to a two-year contract, and re-signed their own lefty specialist, Jerry Blevins, who missed almost the entire season with a broken arm.

As a result, their late-inning bullpen mostly will feature Blevins, Bastardo and righty Addison Reed setting up for closer Jeurys Familia.

Clippard, who turns 31 on Sunday, will earn $12.25 million, including a $4 million signing bonus, according to reports, with the Diamondbacks.
