BRODIE HAMPSON completed a remarkable victory on Jennys Surprise in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup that at one stage looked as unlikely as it was heart-warming, coming from well off the pace for an emotional win.

Hampson, who was fulfilling her ambition to ride in a race in front of her terminally ill father Mark, lifted the 5-4 favourite to victory from the most unlikely of positions.

Hampson looked well beaten on the Fergal O’Brien-trained Jennys Surprise, but the eight-year-old kept finding and rallied all the way to the line. Still five lengths down jumping the last, the pair finished strongest.

Hampson’s father was given 30 days to live at the beginning of December, but she said: “I made sure he held on to watch.”

Sergeant Mark Hampson served in 47 Regiment Royal Artillery for 22 years, meaning his daughter could ride in the race.

‘It’s a dream come true’

“They just quickened away and I couldn’t go with them, but she stays well and I thought they might come back, so I was just hoping for the best,” said a delighted Hampson. “It wasn’t far from the winning line that I realised I was getting there.

“It’s a dream come true. Dad has been up and down, with good days and bad, but thank God today was a good day – the best day ever.

“To get him here was just amazing.

“Dad’s always wanted to see me ride in this race, in his colours, and I hadn’t yet had a winner in them despite a lot of attempts, so to do it in these colours in this race and win it like that is a dream come true.”

Her father added: “I’m absolutely chuffed for my daughter. Chuffed to bits. When they turned in I was hoping for third, then second, and then she ran through to win. I’m so proud of her.”
