SMASHING may not have fared as well as Road To Riches in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, pulling up while that rival finished third, but the tables were turned at Navan as Henry de Bromhead’s chaser bounced back to form to register a game success.

Smashing, back on his favoured soft surface, was bounced out into the lead by Jonathan Burke and showed a good attitude to repel the challenge of Road To Riches, who loomed alongside at the third-last and threw down a persistent challenge.

Smashing crossed the line half a length to the good, while Foxrock flew home to finish a never-threatening third, a further three-quarters of a length behind.

Prolific winner

It was Smashing’s fourth win from his last five starts and his second win at Grade 2 level. However, this was the most significant victory of Smashing’s career as it was achieved against a dual Grade 1 winner in Road To Riches.

Road To Riches, who boasted the stronger form, was sent off as the 4-5 favourite – while Smashing was next best in the market at 9-4.

‘Kept picking up’

“He is just so effective on that sort of ground. He ran a great race to the top of the hill at Cheltenham but the ground just took its toll from there,” rider Jonathan Burke said. “He is probably not a quick horse but on this sort of ground he gallops and jumps and does everything right.”

Burke added: “Road To Riches was bang on my tail the whole way around. I could feel him, but my lad just kept picking up every time he felt him come near him.

“When Davy [on Road To Riches] took me on over the third-last, he quickened up again. He was really good at all the fences in the home straight.”

Punchestown for Riches

Noel Meade, trainer of Road To Riches, said: “When the rain came I was worried. I am obviously disappointed that he has been beaten but he has run well. He will go for the Punchestown Gold Cup now.”

Road To Riches finished third to Don Cossack at Punchestown last year, and Gordon Elliott’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner could again be among the opposition.
