Goodwood: Tight finishes often provide in-running problems

GOODWOOD is a track often associated with hard-luck stories and in-running problems, and there was a controversial finish to the 6f handicap on Friday as winner Seeking Magic was demoted to third having drifted from the stands’ rail to the far side.

Ryan Tate was aboard the Clive Cox-trained eight-year-old, and having bagged the lead, the pair then carried several of their rivals across the track before holding on by a head.

However, following a lengthy stewards’ inquiry, the result was amended, with Go Far, originally the runner-up, awarded the race, while Huntsmans Close was promoted from third to second.

Both were affected by Seeking Magic veering off line, along with Clear Spring, while Jim Crowley was forced to ease off completely on Charles Molson after being left with nowhere to go.

Stewards explanation

Stipendiary steward Richard Westropp faced the cameras on Racing UK once the amended result had been announced, and offered an explanation into the decision.

“The drift is so dramatic and from approximately one and a half furlongs out,” he said.

“He has carted them across three-quarters of the way across the track to the far side rail. We considered it to be one sweeping bit of interference.

“In my mind and the panel’s mind it was easier to change the result than leave it.”

‘No disputing they came right across the track’

Ryan Tate was handed a seven-day ban for careless riding.

Speaking before the result was changed, trainer Clive Cox said: ” He’s never done that before in his life and I don’t know why he has. He’s eight and he’s run here before.

“Ryan did his best to keep him straight and did miraculously to finish in front. But there’s no disputing they came right across the track.”
