GUN RUNNER (Steve Asmussen/Florent Geroux) is heading for Kentucky after a fluent victory in the Louisiana Derby, $1 million feature of a mammoth 15-race card at Fair Grounds on Saturday.

Sent off just short of 4-1, the son of Candy Ride followed up his victory in the Risen Star at the New Orleans venue with another accomplished display, taking control on the far turn and then drawing away to win by four and a half lengths.

Gun Runner will go to Churchill Downs with a career record of four out of five, his only defeat coming on a sloppy track he hated.

“He’s a very quality horse,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “He’s got talent – what I love is how fast he is.”

The favourite Mo Tom was the hard-luck story of the race, getting brutally stopped as jockey Corey Lanerie attempted a rails run before closing to nearly snatch an unlikely third.

“It was a bad ride and totally my fault,” Lanerie said, speaking to the Blood-Horse. “He came underneath me and I had more horse than I knew what to do with. I got him in trouble and went inside when I shouldn’t have. I doubt they’ll let me sit on him again. He’s a great horse.”
