MICHAEL DODS believes Mecca’s Angel’s lacklustre display in last week’s King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot can be put down to her being in season.

The five-year-old was backed into 6-4 favouritism for the Group 1 sprint as rain meant the week’s racing began on soft ground but she could beat only one runner home as Profitable landed the spoils.

Dods admits his team have not been able to find a concrete answer for the disappointing display and says she now appears in fine health.

“We tested her thoroughly and could find nothing wrong with her, and though she didn’t show it, I am sure she was in season,” Dods said.

Nunthorpe defence the target

Dods has now turned his sights to a defence of Mecca’s Angel’s Nunthorpe Stakes title at York.

The mare scored an emotional victory in the race last August as she got the better of the Wesley Ward-trained US raider Acapulco.

“She is fine and although there is a race in Ireland for her next month we might go straight for the Nunthorpe at York,” said Dods.

Another Group 1-winning sprinter returns

Elsewhere, trainer Adrian Keatley is plotting the return of the Sprint Cup-winning sprinter G Force, who has not been seen since beating only two home in the Prix De La Foret at Longchamp last October.

Now owned by the Equinegrowthpartners Syndicate, of Jet Setting fame, the five-year-old is set to line up in the Dubai Duty Free Jumeirah Creekside Dash Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday.

“We were thrilled to get G Force and he’s a quality addition to the yard,” said Keatley.

“We’re keen to get him going and the race on Saturday looks an ideal starting point. Hopefully we can get him back to the sort of form that saw him land the Sprint Cup.”
