Galileo Gold: 2,000 Guineas winner will not run in the Derby

GALILEO GOLD has been ruled out of the Investec Derby once and for all with connections revealing on Friday the Qipco 2,000 Guineas winner has been taken out of the Epsom Classic.

The Al Shaqab Racing-owned Galileo Gold will seek to complete a Guineas double at the Curragh on Saturday but there were still hopes entertained by some in the sport he would move up in distance for the Derby.

However, Hugo Palmer told the Racing Post: “He is not being left in the Derby.

“I had a long and enjoyable conversation with Sheikh Joaan on Lockinge day. We are both of the view that the midsummer race we dream of winning is the one he sponsors, the Sussex Stakes.

“For that reason we’re not entertaining the option of stepping him up in trip to a mile and half. Leaving him in the Derby would simply have clouded the issue.”

Horses engaged in the Derby needed to have their entry confirmed by noon on Friday to stay in contention.
