TWO wins from nine rides made Tom Marquand’s trip to Australia a successful one, and the champion apprentice was especially pleased with his defeat of Damien Oliver  last weekend.

The 17-year-old struck on his first ride on Tashbeeh at Caulfield, and repeated the feat on the horse in a handicap at Flemington.

Multiple Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Oliver lodged a protest, arguing Marquand had caused interference with his ride Second Bullet at the top of the straight, but the stewards found in favour of Marquand.

“”Both of the wins were fantastic,” Marquand told AAP Racing. “I think Flemington was the better one, beating Damien Oliver by about a nose. Then I was a bit worried when I came back in and they said there was a stewards’ inquiry, but to beat someone like that in a tight finish is a great buzz.”

Based with the training team of David Hayes and Tom Daberning, Marquand’s month-long spell in Australia comes to an end this Friday, and he only had a handful of rides to protect his 3lb claim for the British season.

The jockey added: “Next year I probably won’t have a claim so that could make things a bit easier if I did come back.”

He made a positive impression on Dabernig, who said: “He’s a talented up-and-coming rider and I think we’ll probably hear a lot more of him. I’m sure he’ll outride his claim pretty quickly in the UK based on what I’ve seen of him.”
