David Wright expected to play in minor league games Monday

PORT ST. LUCIE — David Wright will likely play in a game Monday, possibly two at the same time.

The Mets captain, who has been held back by spinal stenosis this spring, is expected to take at-bats in minor league games on Monday.

“Were going to meet with the medical staff Monday and see where he’s at,” Mets manager Terry Collins said “He’ll face live pitching here in a few days.”

Wright said he has progressed through all the checkpoints — like running the bases and cutting and turning — that the medical staff has asked him to do. He expects to get three or four at-bats in Monday’s minor league games. The third baseman said it will not be long after that until he plays in his first Grapefruit League game.

“Not long,” Wright said “Playing in games is playing in games, whether it’s here or on the minor league side.”

Wright, who missed 115 games last season with the back condition, likely will not play defense in the minor league games. Collins said it was unlikely Wright would get into his first Grapefruit League game until after the scheduled day off Wednesday. Team sources have told the News that the target date for Wright is Friday, which happens to be the only home game for the Mets next week.

IN THE FLO

Wilmer Flores was in the lineup back at shortstop for the Mets Saturday. Last year, he started 96 games at shortstop for the Mets, who gave him the starting job over Ruben Tejada coming out of spring training. He committed 14 errors there, and the Mets moved him to second base in June, before moving him back when Tejada suffered a broken leg in the playoffs.

Flores had been told to focus on learning third base this spring to be ready to back-up Wright this season, but now he’s working back in at short.

“I guess I’ll be playing here and there and today was the time for me to play short,” Flores said. “(Collins) told me yesterday I was playing short today, so I am fine with it.”

DOTS ALL FOLKS

Bartolo Colon, working on his breaking pitches, allowed four earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings in the Mets’ 14-9 loss to the Cardinals at Tradition Field Saturday.
