Curtis Granderson leaves Mets camp with possible pink eye

PORT ST. LUCIE — Curtis Granderson left Mets spring training camp Monday to see an eye doctor. The Mets right fielder felt “something in his eye” and had redness around it, so the team sent him to have it checked out. The concern is that it is pink eye.

“If it is, we’ll keep him away from the team for a couple days, it’s really contagious,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “I don’t know how long it will be, but you don’t want that spreading.”

Granderson came to the ballpark Monday morning wearing glasses, which is unusual for him, and left before the team came out to the practice fields for stretches.

Collins was hopeful this would not affect Granderson beyond this week. The veteran outfielder likes to play in a lot of spring training games and accumulate at-bats in game situations, and the Mets open their Grapefruit League schedule on Thursday in Viera against the Nationals.

Luckily, the Mets have a surplus of outfielders in camp.

They signed Alejandro De Aza with the intention of platooning him with Juan Lagares in center field this season. The Mets scrapped that plan when a deal for slugger Yoenis Cespedes emerged. Concern about injuries had Mets GM Sandy Alderson saying it was likely the Mets would go into Opening Day with all five outfielders — Michael Conforto, Cespedes, Granderson, Lagares and De Aza — on the roster.
