Cuban aces Tiant, Lazo to throw out first pitches in Havana

Fittingly, two Cuban aces will throw out the ceremonial first pitches before the historic exhibition game in Havana this week between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban National Team.

Luis Tiant, who won 229 games in his 19-year career in the majors, and righty Pedro Luis Lazo, a longtime star for the Cuban National Team and Pinar del Rio, will deliver the pitches, Major League Baseball and the players union both announced Sunday.

The league and union also announced the six-man umpiring crew for the game, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Estadio Latinoamericano. Two MLB umpires, Angel Hernandez and Laz Diaz, will join four Cuban umpires – Elber Ibarra, Juan Jose Cuevas, Jorge Luis Perez and Luis Felipe Casana – in working the game.

The game marks the first visit to Cuba by a big-league team since the Orioles played an exhibition there on March 28, 1999.

The 75-year-old Tiant was a four-time 20-game winner during his career and made three All-Star teams. He won two American League ERA titles and was 2-0 in the 1975 World Series, though his Red Sox lost in seven games to the Cincinnati Reds.

Lazo, 42, won two Olympic gold medals (1996 and 2004) with the Cubans and pitched for Pinar del Rio from 1997-2009.

MLB fans will probably recognize a few other guests at the game, along with Tiant – Joe Torre, Dave Winfield, Derek Jeter and Jose Cardenal, a native of Cuba who played 18 years in the majors and later coached with the Yankees, also will attend.
