Jarred Tinordi claims he did not knowingly take a banned substance.

The NHL announced Wednesday that Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jarred Tinordi has been suspended 20 games for violating the league’s performance enhancing substances program.

Per the collective bargaining agreement, a referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health is mandatory.

“I am extremely disappointed that I failed a test under the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program,” Tinordi said in a statement released by the NHLPA. “I did not knowingly take a banned substance. I understand, however, that I am responsible for what enters my body as a professional athlete and I accept the suspension. I will work hard towards my return to the ice and will learn from this frustrating setback.”

The 6-6, 215-pound blue liner is the second NHL player to be suspended this season for violating the performance enhancing substance policy. Anaheim center Shawn Horcoff was suspended for 20 games in January for what Horcoff said was a treatment designed to accelerate the healing process for an injury suffered during autumn.

Tinordi, 24, has played 10 NHL games this season. The Coyotes acquired Tinordi on Jan. 15 in the trade which sent All-Star John Scott to the Canadiens.
