SIRE DE GRUGY could be fitted with blinkers in next Wednesday’s Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase in a bid to overcome the challenge of Un De Sceaux and land a second success in the feature race of the second day of the Festival.

The 2014 Champion Chase-winner has enjoyed a renaissance this season, winning a second Betfair Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown in December.

Sire De Grugy, a 14-1 chance for the race with the sponsors, proved no match for next week’s odds-on favourite Un De Sceux when the pair met in January’s Sodexo Clarence House Chase at Ascot and trainer Gary Moore is hoping blinkers could help close the gap between the pair this time around.

“The plan is to school him [on Thursday] and we’re going to pop a pair of blinkers on him for the first time,” Moore said in his Betway blog.

“That’s not because he’s ungenuine or anything like that, it’s just to see whether it sharpens him up a bit.

“He’s that bit older and wiser, and if they can eke out a tiny bit of improvement, it may just get us that bit closer to Un De Sceaux.

If he goes well in them, then there is every chance he may wear them next week at Cheltenham. We will make that decision nearer to the time, though.”

Rain a positive

Moore also revealed he was delighted to hear that 24mm of rain fell at Cheltenham during Tuesday night, leaving the course officially soft on Wednesday.

“He’s in really great form at home and I was delighted to hear that they had proper rain at Cheltenham [on Tuesday] night,” said the trainer.

“I will be even more thrilled if it rains next Tuesday night too!”

He does like to be beside the seaside

Sire De Grugy is likely to make a return trip to the beach as the final touches are put to his Champion Chase preparation this week.

The ten-year-old has had the same routine every year and Moore said: “It’s become part of his Cheltenham preparation and he just seems to love it there.

“The plan after that is just to keep him ticking over as all the hard work has been done and fingers crossed we get him to the festival.”
