Willie Mullins

Willie Mullins: will he make the bookmakers pay?

Willie Mullins vs The bookmakers

LAST year, day one of the festival belonged to Willie Mullins. Douvan, Un De Sceaux and Faugheen had the bookies fearing a multi-million pound payout, and but for THAT last-flight fall from Annie Power, they would have been in pieces.

As it was, Mullins still won the Mares’ Hurdle with Glens Melody to complete a day one four-timer, and he has the chance to replicate it. Min carries hopes in the Supreme, then it is time for Douvan in the Racing Post Arkle. Annie Power gets the chance to right last year’s wrong in the Champion Hurdle, and Vroum Vroum Mag is the Mares’ Hurdle favourite. If all oblige expect some grey-faced bookmakers for the remaining three days.

My Tent Or Yours vs Father Time
Imagine competing at the highest level in sport in April 2014, and then trying to recreate that standard nearly two years later. This is the task My Tent Or Yours faces in the Champion Hurdle. Runner-up to Jezki in 2014, My Tent Or Yours has been pleasing connections at home, and also when taken to Kempton for a racecourse gallop. But there is no substitute for match practice, and he is now nine, the oldest runner in Tuesday’s field.

Tony McCoy after Synchronised won the Gold Cup

Cheltenham handicaps: Sir Antony McCoy cannot help punters now

Punters vs Handicaps
The big races on day one may look to be at the mercy of the favourites, but it is a different tale for the two handicaps that need to be unravelled.

The Ultima Handicap Chase has not been a happy hunting ground for favourite backers, with only Sir Anthony McCoy aiding punters since 2006 when getting Wichita Lineman up in 2009, and neither are at the festival this year.

The Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase is only marginally better with two winning favourites since 2006, and McCoy was responsible for one of those too. It may pay to think outside the box.

Britain vs Ireland
The BetBright Prestbury Cup will be handed to the nation that trains the most winners over the course of the festival. The Irish are yet to get their hands on it, but came mighty close last year, going down 14-13.

Given the strength Willie Mullins alone possesses it does look a tough ask for the home team to win out again, but Cheltenham often provides unexpected results.

If your carefully thought out selections fail, you’ve got three more days

Hope vs Expectation
Every season the hype for the festival seems to start earlier, and come the first day anticipation is at fever-pitch for professionals and punters alike.

Could we have another fabulous day one for Willie Mullins? Will new stars emerge? Will an old favourite roll back the years? All, some or none of this could happen.

But if the first day’s action leaves you deflated don’t worry, you have another three days to regain buoyancy.
