JOCKEY Gavin Sheehan, who enjoyed the finest moment of his career when Cole Harden won the World Hurdle at Cheltenham last year, reckons the seven-year-old should not be dismissed for Thursday’s race despite failing to win since.

Sheehan says the testing ground this winter has not suited the son of Westerner, who provided trainer Warren Greatrex and the rider with their first Festival triumphs 12 months ago.

“It was a brilliant day,” said Sheehan, a guest on The Morning Line. “Dreams really did come true and we’re going to try to repeat it.

“We planned the whole season around trying to retain his title. I think he’s run well this season but it’s one of those you can’t go the Cole Harden gallop on that ground. We’re waiting for better ground and you’ll see a different horse.

“He just seems to have taken everything well this year.”

Cole Harden is 8-1 with Ladbrokes and William Hill for the World Hurdle, which is now sponsored by Ryanair.

Thistlecrack, unbeaten in three this term and six and a half lengths too good for Cole Harden in Newbury’s Long Distance Hurdle in November, is hot favourite for the World Hurdle at around evens.

The ground at Cheltenham is soft, but clerk of the course Simon Claisse expects to add “good to soft in places” to the description this weekend and conditions are expected to be dry until Friday.
