Chase Utley still hasn't learned to slide into a base

[ad_1]

At some point this season, Chase Utley will almost certainly fall victim to the Chase Utley rule.

On Monday night, the Dodgers infielder headed home and almost took out Padres catcher Derek Norris as he reached for the plate.

Chase Utley tried to run through Padres catcher Derek Norris during Opening Night on Monday.

Called out on the timely tag, Utley was practically in front of home plate by the time he slid, rather than down the third base line.

The Mets villain’s most recent slide was out of the lane to home plate, but still nowhere near as egregious as his takeout roll that broke Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada’s leg in the postseason.

Utley’s barrelroll into Ruben Tejada during the NLDS caused MLB to change the slide rule to protect fielders.

During Game 2 of the NLDS, Utley barreled into second base, slamming into Tejada and sliding several feet past the base.

Utley was suspended for two games – which was eventually overturned – and MLB updated the slide rule to include language that “slides on potential double plays will require runners to make a bona fide attempt to reach and remain on the base.”

The so-called Utley rule was applied for the first time on Opening Day when the Nationals were awarded a double play after Braves outfielder Nick Markakis slid past the base trying to interrupt Daniel Murphy’s throw.
