NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES is optimistic that stable star The New One can make it third time lucky in the Stan James Champion Hurdle on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival in 16 days’ time.

Winner of the 2013 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle, The New One has finished third and fifth in the last two runnings of the championship race but after an uninterrupted preparation from the turn of the year, Twiston-Davies thinks he has a “very good chance” of big-race success.

“This time last year we were really struggling with him,” said Twiston-Davies in an interview in Sunday’s Racing Post. “He was in a swimming pool, lame, and after all that he was beaten only eight lengths. He’s a lot better this year and we think he’s got a very good chance, even if nobody else seems to.”

‘Plan is going nicely’

The absence of title-holder Faugheen has inevitably encouraged many yards in their hope that they have a live Champion Hurdle contender, but Twiston-Davies was bullish long before the news of Faugheen’s injury broke.

The trainer added: “Obviously your thinking has to change when a horse like Faugheen comes out but all we can do is get The New One there in the best possible shape and that part of the plan is going nicely.

“These horses don’t change from seven to eight, whatever some trainers will have you believe, but he’s in great shape, still big and strong, and I think the Champion Hurdle is the perfect race for him.”

Owned by Simon and Sarah Such and Gino Paletta, The New One is a general 7-1 chance for the Champion Hurdle, with Faugheen’s stablemate Annie Power heading the market at a top-price 2-1.
