Carlos Beltran hopes he never has to play first base again

Carlos Beltran is up for anything this season. A few days at designated hitter? Sure. Lots of time in right field? Absolutely, that’s what he likes best.

But the Yankee slugger draws the line at playing first base, something he’s only done once in his 18-year career. It apparently was a transformative experience. Not in a good way.

“No, no, no,” Beltran said. “I would do anything. Except that…It’s a different animal.”

BELTRAN COULD RETIRE AFTER SEASON, LOVES YANKEES’ BULLPEN

Beltran played five innings at first at the Stadium on April 13, 2014 against the Red Sox when Francisco Cervelli, who was playing first, had to come out of the game because of a severe hamstring injury. Mark Teixeira was hurt at the time, which pressed Cervelli into duty at first.

There were no mishaps in the field for Beltran, he was credited with three putouts, just some eyes opened — his own.

Carlos Beltran is open to playing DH in 2016, but hopes Alex Rodriguez has another healthy and productive season in that role for the Bombers.

“Joe (Girardi) said, ‘Carlos, you want to go to first?’ I said, ‘Brother, I’ll go.’ I had no (protective) cup,” Beltran recalled Wednesday at a Topps event.

“David Ortiz was hitting. I’m like, ‘Oh, my God.’ The first pitch, I didn’t even see it coming out of the pitcher’s hand. Everything happened so fast. That day, I said, ‘Wow, my respect for the infielders, pitchers.’ The game out there (outfield) is so easy, so simple. You see the ball come off the bat.

“Everything happens so fast in the infield. I was praying to God. I was very nervous. It had been a long time where I didn’t get nervous in the game of baseball, but that day, I was very nervous.”

Beltran wasn’t even Girardi’s first choice for a first-base emergency. “I remember Joe went to Ichiro and said, ‘You want to go to first?’ And Ichiro said, ‘Hell, no.’ So I went to first.

“Not a fun moment for me.”

As for DHing this season, Beltran says he’ll do it in spots. But he prefers playing the outfield regularly. With Girardi saying Alex Rodriguez will be the Yanks’ designated hitter full-time, Beltran figures to play right field most of the time.

“I love being in the outfield, I swear to God, I love it,” Beltran said. “DH once in a while, I can take it. It doesn’t really excite me, being an everyday DH, for me, because my whole career I’ve been in the outfield. One day, two days, something happens, I’d do it. But I would love to be in the outfield.

“Let’s be positive right now, hope that Alex stays healthy and puts another year like he did last year.”
