SAN FRANCISCO – Cam Newton was a big winner on the night before Super Bowl 50.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback was named both the NFL MVP and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year on Saturday night during the NFL Honors ceremony at the Billy Graham Civic Auditorium. He received 48 of a possible 50 votes for Most Valuable Player. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer received the other two.

The award came as no surprise in a season in which the 26-year-old Newton accounted for 45 touchdowns – 35 passing and another 10 running. He threw for 3,837 yards and ran for another 636 during the regular season, too.

Meanwhile, Giants quarterback Eli Manning came up short in his quest to become the first Giants player ever to win the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. Though the 35-year-old Manning was a finalist, the award went to San Francisco 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin.

Manning will still receive a consolation prize of $11,000 from the NFL Foundation and Nationwide to donate to a charity of his choice.

And Manning certainly has plenty of charities to choose from. He’s served as the Chair of the New York March for Babies for the past seven years and helped them raise more than $25 million. He also has led a “Tackle Kids’ Cancer” initiative with Hackensack University Medical Center, where he has spent countless hours visiting patients and doctors in the pediatric cancer center. He also has founded the Eli and Abby Manning Childrens’ Clinics in Mississippi and raised almost $3 million in a five-year span.

Among the other winners: Houston defensive end J.J. Watt won his third NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. Rams running back Todd Gurley was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters won the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Chiefs safety Eric Berry, who battled lymphoma last season, won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award.
