Bullies unite! Incognito tweets support for Donald Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will rally in Arizona on Saturday.

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Richie Incognito tweeted in support of Donald Trump on Saturday morning, announcing that he was headed to a rally for the lightning-rod Republican presidential candidate.

“On my way to the @realDonaldTrump rally. Let’s make America great again!!!” Incognito tweeted.

Trump was in Arizona Saturday, set to host two rallies in advance of Tuesday’s GOP primary in that state. Trump, who is battling Ted Cruz and Ohio governor John Kasich for the Republican nomination, remains the frontrunner, and he continues to collect support from prominent athletes. Former Yankees Paul O’Neill and Johnny Damon and quarterback Tom Brady have all expressed varying degrees of support for Trump, as have former NFL running back Herschel Walker. Ex-NFL receiver Terrell Owens said recently that he believes Trump “may be what the country needs.”

Thus Incognito is far from alone, although his public backing of Trump hardly seems useful to a man who has seemingly bullied his way to the top of the Republican scrap heap. Incognito, 32, remains best known for his role in the Miami Dolphins’ BullyGate scandal of 2013, a messy incident that saw him serving as the ringleader for the harassment of former teammate Jonathan Martin. An NFL investigation eventually concluded that Incognito, along with then-teammates Mike Pouncey and John Jerry (now with the Giants) had bullied Martin, who is now out of football, with racial, homophobic and misogynistic slurs.

Incognito never played for the Dolphins again, serving an eight-game suspension before getting released. He did not play in 2014, and briefly checked into an Arizona psychiatric facility after taking a baseball bat to his own Ferrari in a bizarre incident. Still, last season, he was back in the NFL, catching on with Rex Ryan’s Buffalo Bills and getting named a Pro Bowl alternate. The Bills signed him to a three-year contract extension last month.

Incognito claimed to have “changed for the better” last summer, although it is unclear whether that has happened; on Friday, he delivered an Instagram post from Arizona, showing off a Ferrari with the line “I’d hit it….”
