Big question: Which returning hero are you looking forward to?

My Tent Or Yours

My Tent Or Yours: not raced since April 2014

NEW champions and future stars will be seen in action at the Cheltenham Festival next week but the sight of former heroes returning to the scene of their greatest triumphs will be equally evocative for racegoers.

Few horses are remembered with such passion as those who have been champions and run their best races at the Cheltenham Festival and this year many will be back aiming to repeat – or better – their great performance of the past.

Stan James Champion Hurdle

: 9-1

Remember him? If it had not been for his headstrong racing style he may have already won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Champion Hurdle instead of narrowly losing out in both. The nine-year-old has not raced since April 2014 due to injury but has looked sharp in racecourse workouts at Kempton and will be aiming to make it third-time lucky this season.

What they say
“If luck is on our side we’ll get there and in good shape, better than I had probably dared hope three or four weeks ago. Without having a run I think that’s as well as we could possibly do,” trainer Nicky Henderson.

Wild celebrations: Sire De Grugy with Jamie Moore and connectios in the winner's enclosure

Few winners at the Festival have been as popular as Sire De Grugy when he landed the 2014 Champion Chase for Gary Moore, Jamie Moore and the Preston family. It has not all be plain sailing since with injury and loss of form affecting the now ten-year-old, but his last three runs have been much better with a Grade 1 win and two solid runs in defeat.

What they say
“I couldn’t be any happier with him as he’s in a good place right now. He’s exactly where I want him to be two weeks away from the Champion Chase at the Festival,” trainer Gary Moore.

Sprinter Sacre

Sprinter Sacre: won both of his races this season

At the top of his game the sight of Sprinter Sacre taking on Un De Sceaux over the Cheltenham fences would have been truly spectacular, but the fact the two are even facing each other is something to look forward to given the problems the former champion has had. Sprinter Sacre had the world at his feet when cantering to win after win in 2012-13 before heart problems struck. His two wins this season have been great crowd pleasers and a second Champion Chase crown would surely bring the house down.

What they say
“Somebody someday has got to get up alongside Un De Sceaux and see what happens. Somebody has got to get to him, and I hope it’s going to be us,” trainer Nicky Henderson.

CHELTENHAM, ENGLAND - MARCH 12: Richard Johnson riding Balthazar King clear the last to win The Glenfarclas Handicap

There are not many braver horses in National Hunt racing than Balthazar King, whether it be jumping a fence or overcoming serious injuries sustained in last year’s Crabbie’s Grand National to return as enthusiastic as ever. Twice a winner of the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham, Balthazar King has not raced since being injured at Aintree but, judging on the huge volume of ‘get well’ messages he received, there will be plenty cheering him on.

What they say
“He’s always been extraordinarily tough and Dickie [Johnson] loves him because he says they’re both as thick as each other and never think of giving up,” trainer Philip Hobbs.
