TRAINER Gordon Elliott believes that better ground at the Cheltenham Festival will enhance the claims of Don Cossack in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Don Cossack, who has won nine of his last 11 starts, is effective under a variety of conditions, but arguably his best performance came on good ground when he beat Cue Card by 26 lengths in the Grade 1 Betfred Melling Chase at Aintree last year.

Speaking to the Racing & Football Outlook regarding Don Cossack, Elliott said: “He is now as strong as he has ever been and we are all very excited about his chances in the Gold Cup. He will be better on quicker ground, which he is very likely to get, and I couldn’t be happier with him.”

Considering headgear

Don Cossack, who topped last year’s Anglo-Irish jumps classifications, is 9-2 joint-favourite along with Vautour for the Festival showpiece, but he did not impress everyone when winning the Ladbrokes Ireland Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles last time, racing lazily before responding strongly to his rider’s urgings.

Although Don Cossack was in contention when falling at the second-last in the William Hill King George VI Chase, he had lost his position at a crucial stage before staying on strongly, prompting some observers to call for headgear.

Elliott is pondering whether to fit Don Cossack with headgear but will wait until he has a better idea about ground conditions before making a decision.

Elliott said: “We have talked about putting some headgear on him at Cheltenham, but we won’t make our minds up until much nearer the time as the ground will be important to the decision.”
