Fair Grounds: Risen Star Stakes (Grade 2) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo

THE Kentucky Derby trail moves way down yonder in New Orleans on Saturday when leading Classic hope Airoforce (Mark Casse/Julien Leparoux) is the star attraction in the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes.

Beaten just a head by Ballydoyle’s Hit It A Bomb in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, Airoforce went on to beat subsequent Grade 1 winner Mor Spirit – rated Bob Baffert’s top Triple Crown contender – on sloppy dirt in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Derby venue Churchill Downs.

In a maximum field, Airoforce faces the leading lights among the Louisiana locals, headed by Lecomte Stakes 1-2-3 Mo Tom (Tom Amoss/Corey Lanerie),Tom’s Ready (Dallas Stewart/John Velazquez) and Uncle Walter (Mike Maker/Javier Castellano).

Gun Runner (Steve Asmussen/Florent Geroux), fourth to Airoforce in the Kentucky Jockey Club, has been posting some impressive workouts on the Fair Grounds surface ready for this seasonal debut.

Ladbrokes: 2 Airoforce, 4 Mo Tom, 6 Gun Runner, 10 Tom’s Ready, Uncle Walter, 14 Bistraya, 16 Dolphus, Forevamo, 20 Candy My Boy, Its All Relevant, 25 In Equality, Zapperini, 50 Laoban

Also on Saturday

Fair Grounds: Rachel Alexandra Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo fillies

Carrying the Stonestreet silks of the great filly after whom this race is named, $1.15million purchase Royal Obsession (Steve Asmussen/John Velazquez) bids to extend her unbeaten record to three.

However, stablemate Stageplay (Steve Asmussen/Florent Geroux), a daughter of Stonestreet’s Curlin who has won three out of four, is the morning-line favourite in a $200,000 event also featuring Forever Darling (Richard Baltas/Javier Castellano), a Grade 2 winner on the west coast.

Santa Anita: Buena Vista Stakes (Grade 2) 1m, turf, 4yo+ f/m (midnight GMT)

Grade 1 winners Stormy Lucy (Ed Moger/Kent Desormeaux), shock 65-1 winner of the Matriarch at Del Mar, and Her Emmynency (Kristin Mulhall/Joe Talamo) feature in a competitive field.
