Report: Australia, Saturday

Morphettville (Adelaide): South Australia Derby (Group 1) 1m4½f, turf, 3yo

FORMER Irish-based jump jockey John Allen claimed a milestone Group 1 win on the Flat in the South Australian Derby at Morphettville aboard 4-1 chance Howard Be Thy Name (Darren Weir)

Allen, who went to Australia five years ago, works for Darren Weir in Victoria and the leading trainer regularly uses him in Flat races as well as on his jumpers.

With Brad Rawiller in Brisbane riding for Weir, Allen was given the chance on Howard Be Thy Name in Saturday’s 2,500-metre staying test in Adelaide.

Godolphin’s Etymology had to settle for another Classic second to go with his runner-up finish to Tarzino in the Victoria Derby as Howard Be The Name went to the line strongly under confident riding from Allen.

“I came fron Ireland as a battling jumps jockey,” Allen said. “I never rode on the Flat over there. I was grateful to get the ride today and happy to get the job done for Darren. It was a messy race early but he was always travelling well. All credit to Darren.”

Weir was at Caulfield on Saturday where he had three winners and said the SA Derby victory was a thrill.

“It looked a messy race but Johnny held his composure and rode him terrific,” he said. “It’s a big thrill. “He (Allen) deserves it – he’s a great rider.”

First Melbourne city winner for Matt Cumani

Matt Cumani, the son of Newmarket trainer Luca, was able to celebrate his first city winner after setting up at Ballarat with Show A Star (Jordan Childs) in the Peter Jackson Handicap at Caulfield.

The trainer’s first winner was at Bendigo eight days ago and he had another at Cranbourne on Friday night before Show A Star’s win as 4-1 favourite. “Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come,” said Cumani, 35.

“For me it’s a big milestone. I hope they will be common in the future but for now it feels like a huge step from where I have been even just a few days ago, a few weeks ago and six months ago. It’s fantastic and hopefully we can keep the ball rolling.”

The favourite Japonisme was a length and a quarter back in third in the first Group 1 event of the Brisbane winter carnival.
