Ashforth's Angles: who are Colin, Harry and Jimmie?

Men of Mystery

David Ashforth previews the racing from Catterick, Leicester and Lingfield on Tuesday

WHO played Sybil in Fawlty Towers? Wrong! Prunella Scales played Sybil in the television series but in the Cayman Drama Society’s 1991 production Sybil was played by Caroline Beresford-Wylie. Four years later, in Agnes of God, she played the Mother Superior.

Today, at Leicester, Beresford-Wylie plays the part of racehorse owner. It’s a part she’s played before, notably as the owner of the splendid Irish Raptor, winner of Aintree’s Topham Chase in 2009.

Today there is a small mystery, for Beresford-Wylie’s horse is called I Am Colin (2.20), a name that makes me want to name another horse No You’re Not.

‘Why Colin?’

Why is Mrs B-W’s runner in the Squire Osbaldeston Chase (2.20) called I Am Colin? Who is Colin and what has he got to do with the seven-year-old gelding by Zafeen out of Dd’s Glenalla by Be My Native?

Mrs B-W (sorry but you shouldn’t have such a long name) owns Dd’s Glenalla, who has since produced Colin’s Brother and Colin’s Sister. Really, they are Colin’s Half-Brother and Colin’s Half-Sister but we’ll let that pass. The question remains, why Colin? Who Colin?

Mrs B-W’s horses tend to be trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies but he’s not a Colin, either. Colin Tizzard’s a Colin but what’s he got to do with it?

That’s not all. It appears that Mrs B-W’s mother was a bookmaker and her uncle a jockey called Frederick Fiddle, which would be wonderful if true. Is it true?

In 1921 Walter Beresford became the first president of the Racecourse Bookmakers Protection Association and, later, there was a firm of bookmakers called Beresford & Smith. Does Mrs B-W have a family connection? It’s going too far to say, as Private Eye might, I think we should be told but it makes you wonder.

‘Not a Harry in sight’

As does the fatalistic naming of Onlyfoolsownhorses (Catterick 3.00), which is asking for trouble. No wonder Micky Hammond’s five-year-old was tailed off then pulled up on his debut at Doncaster in January. It might have been better to have called him I Am A Star.

Personally, I’ve always wanted to name a horse Andfinishingfast to see what commentators make of it. But I digress.

It’s not just I Am Colin. At Lingfield, there’s I’m Harry (3.40), which is equally puzzling. Who is Harry, and why? I’m Harry is by Haafhd out of First Approval by Royal Applause, so that’s no help.

He is owned and was bred by the Wickfield Stud, run by Norton and Jane Brookes. He was trained by Barry Hills, not Harry Hills, then by Charles Hills and now by George Baker. Not a Harry in sight.

It’s a relief to turn to the lady amateur riders’ race at Catterick (2.00) where we get another chance to see Donald McCain’s daughter Abby, who rode her first winner over the same course and distance, on Danceintothelight, in December.

This time she’s riding stablemate Astrum with her opponents including – oh, no, Jimmie Brown. Why is he called Jimmie Brown? Who is Jimmie Brown?

Right, that’s enough of that.
