Thursday’s racing: Ludlow and Wincanton

BUT Boreas was angry, as was his wife Oreithyia and their daughter Chione and they did cause frost to descend upon Wincanton and Ludlow which was a real nuisance but what can you do when the God of the north wind, the Goddess of the cold winds and the Goddess of snow are against you?

I shall laugh in the face of Boreas and turn my back scornfully on the two Goddesses and shall plough on as if Wincanton and Ludlow had already passed their inspections. It’s better than facing up to Southwell and Chelmsford. If both jump meetings are off you won’t have to bother to read the rest.

Monkerty Tunkerty

I want Monkerty Tunkerty to win the Higos Insurance Services Somerset National Chase at Wincanton (2.45) and Jaunty Inflight to win the G C Rickards Ltd Handicap Chase at Ludlow (3.40). I also want Tambura to win (1.55). I don’t think Monkerty Tunkerty will win but I think Jaunty Inflight might and Tambura could.

A year ago Monkerty Tunkerty won the same race and the delight shown by trainer Jess Westwood and jockey Alice Mills was wonderful to watch. Westwood has only a handful of horses and has had only four winners in the last four seasons, all supplied by Monkerty Tunkerty. Mills cannot be accused of hogging the winner’s enclosure, either, so victory would be great for her too.

Today’s trip and ground are fine but Monkerty Tunkerty, who has been running moderately in novice hurdles recently, is 6lb higher and (obviously) a year older, making him a 13-year-old. We can cheer and we can hope but we had probably better not bet.

A day to celebrate in Llanspyddid

It’s different at Ludlow, where we can cheer, hope and bet on Jaunty Inflight, who would be a similarly rare winner for Brian Eckley. Eckley has been training for more than 25 years. Some seasons he has a winner and some seasons he doesn’t. One season, 1999-2000, he had three.

So if Jaunty Inflight won today, it would be a day to celebrate in Llanspyddid, in the Brecon Beacons. I don’t think Richard Johnson has ridden for Eckley before but he’s riding Jaunty Inflight for him today when, presumably, he could be riding Lord Lir.

It’s easy to see why because Eckley’s seven-year-old jumped well when second on his chasing debut at Uttoxeter on New Year’s Eve and is only 2lb higher today.

Eckley is not the only man of mystery with runners at Ludlow. Barry Leavy (Georgian Firebird 12.50) has been training since 1999, regularly sending out handfuls rather than hatfuls of winners, but who is he? Just curious, that’s all.

There is one more thing. Go on Tambura! (1.55). I met owner-trainer Godfrey Maundrell recently. A lovely man, he rode his 150th point-to-point winner in 2011, when aged 62, having ridden a treble at Larkhill the previous year. Amazing. Tambura’s being doing well and, although she’s creeping up the weights, she’s got what is known as “a shout.” So let’s shout. Tambura!

Do not miss Ashforth’s Angles every Monday to Thursday on racingpost.com and your mobile from 6pm
